illiam Monroe Trotter institute of the University of Massachusetts Boston was founded in 1984 to address the needs and concerns of the Black community and communities of color in Boston and Massachusetts through research, technical assistance, and public service. Many forms of technical assistance are provided to community groups, organizations, and public agencies. The institute sponsors public forums as a means of disseminating research and involving the community in the discussion of public policy and other issues impacting Blacks locally and nationally.

The institute publishes the Trotter Review, a journal of articles addressing current Black studies, race, and race relations in the United States and abroad.

The institute also publishes research reports and occasional papers on a broad range of topics in the areas of eduaction, employment and training, public health, economic and community development, as well as race relations.

Research and other institute activities are facilitated by research and faculty associates. The Trotter Institute has conducted research for foundations across the nation, and also works with international organizations.

 

CURRENT RESEARCH

 

 

Research Consortium

An interdisciplinary, intercultural panel of scholars researching the question of "Assimilating Americans" through the lens of new immigrants in Greater Boston coming from Asia, Cape Verde, Guatemala, and Haiti.  The premise of this research is that the African American context provides the paradigm for incoming immigrants.  Affiliated faculty fellows: Jorge-Capetillo, Sociology, Glenn Jacobs, Sociology, Tim Sieber, Anthropology, Shirley Tang, American Studies and Asian American Studies.  Alix Cantave, Associate Director is also part of the research team.  Barbara Lewis, Director of the Trotter, is Project Leader.

Health

The Trotter, in association with Dana-Farber, is completing a health profile of Haitian Americans in Boston.  This profile will be expanded to include other segments of the black community in Boston.


State of Black Boston

In collaboration with the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts and the Boston chapter of the NAACP, the Trotter is preparing a State of Black Boston report, which will be issued bi-annually.

Trotter Review

The next issue of the journal, due March 2009, will examine the historical connection between earlier Civil Rights Movements, particularly the Niagara Movement and the birth of the NAACP, and the election of the first African American president.

Tomorrow: A Time to Heal
Barbara Lewis, Director of the Trotter Institute, delivered the annual Martin Luther King address at UMASS Medical School on January 14, 2009. The title of her speech was "Tomorrow: A Time to Heal."

Big Read

Working in conjunction with WUMB, the campus radio station, the Trotter is organizing outreach to local schools and prisons as well as doing cultural programming.  The Big Read, which began in February 2009 and will last through May 2009, is funded by a NEA grant. Change and Transition

Under a Creative Economies Grant, the Trotter, in cooperation with the Color of Film Collaborative, is presenting a staged reading series on the theme of Change and Transition.  The last dramatic reading in the series will take place on Feb. 26 in the Harbor Art Gallery, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Mercy Panel

In collaboration with the Provost's Office and the Office of Human Resources, the Trotter is co-sponsoring a faculty/student panel to discuss the significance of Toni Morrison's novel, A Mercy, which probes the origins of American slavery.   Feb. 25, Campus Center, Ballrooms A&B, 2 p.m.-4 p.m.
